Notes

Instant Crush #1

I have a crush on the world. Chances are, so do you. 'Instant Crush', is going to be a semi-regular column on this blog about that. Tiny notes on things that catch my eye, change my mind, inspire me, make me feel less alone, or remind me of how scary, crazy, beautiful this tiny blue planet is.

1. Melodrama by Lorde

It’s incredible. What an album. So many beautiful turns of phrase. Broadcast the boom-boom-boom-boom, and make ‘em all dance to it.  Also: a big fan of the Baby's Breath flowers she used in her performance on Jimmy Fallon. And that white suit. So good.

2. Michael Bierut is the actual best

I've been reading his book 79 Short Essays on Design this week, and man - what a class act. This talk in particular is a gem. And this talk too. I mean, he is just a gem full-stop, okay? So well-spoken, and passionate. I wanna’ be his best friend. Michael if you’re reading this, be my best friend, please! We can get matching friendship bracelets and everything.

3. Sleep Well Beast  by The National

Speaking of Pentagram, the art direction for The National’s upcoming record is so, so beautiful. Oof!

The photograph of the house. That deep blue colour. The animation on their website. It all just makes me want to cry, it’s so beautiful. I already know I'll love this album and it hasn't even been released yet.

4. Singing in public

You know when you hear someone singing to the songs playing in department stores, shopping malls, or supermarkets? It’s just so nice, right? I don’t know. Something about hearing someone sing that feels like you’re hearing who they are. Like, who they really are. Which makes me think of high school, and listening to choirs and tiny schoolgirls with the biggest voices, and just feeling so sad about how beyond a high school gymnasium, barely anyone will hear them sing. Everyone grows up and stops singing- unless it’s in a private space. We should all sing more. Sing in the shower. Sing in the supermarket. Sing when you’re walking home. Sing EVERYWHERE!

5. Eraser Street

My sister, Eleanor, just launched her clothing label. I am obviously really proud. She's gonna' make it big one day, I just know it. Go show it some love here

6. I went for a run and I didn't hate it

For the past few weeks, every time I've gone walking I have this impulsive thought in the back of my head to just start dancing. Full on, bust-a-move, right then and there in the middle of the street.  Of course, I'd never honestly let myself do that, but I guess the closest we'll all ever get to dancing in public is running, so I've decided to start running now.

I took my new Nike's for a spin tonight, and low and behold, I maybe even liked running a bit. For a minute my brain switched off, and I felt like I was flying on auto-pilot through my suburb. Jee, I finally get it guys. I get why some people love running. What a breakthrough, huh? I don't recognise myself.

7. This campaign by Nike rules

Speaking of Nike, their latest campaign is killer. Boy oh boy, look at these bus stop posters. I love it.

8. Anthony Zukofsky

This interview with Anthony Zukofsky is so good. Specifically this quote:

"As a student, I think you should dip your toes in as many types of work as you possibly can; don’t just focus on one direction. One day in class, Paul Sahre said, “If you’ve already been to a place, why would you want to go back?” It’s simple, but it really stuck with me. It’s the notion of constantly reinventing yourself and always staying uncomfortable no matter how hard it is. I’ve been trying to put myself in that position ever since."

9. Small town syndrome

Went for a drive this morning, and basically remembered I'm living in the Southern Hemisphere's Twin Peaks. Yikes!
